Toddler Proofing your kid's room

You have baby proofed your home for when your baby arrived. You're getting to see them grow right before your very own eyes and before you know it...POOF! Your little one is now starting to crawl, stand, conveying their emotions and wants to explore everything and anything in their reach and sight.

When your child approaches the age of 2 and is getting starting to get mobile — this is when you begin the second phase to ensure your home is safe: Toddler Proofing.

Here are a few preventive measures to ensure your toddler's bedroom is a safe place to sleep:

The Bed

  • Convert the crib into a toddler bed (If that is a feature). If so, purchase the correct hardware to convert the crib into a safe toddler bed.
  • Check all fasteners on the toddler bed to ensure it's nice and tight.
  • Re-read all warning labels from the crib manufacturer. If you are unsure or need assistance, call the crib manufacturer's consumer service center and they'll be able to assist you.
  • The toddler bed should be placed away from the windows. If there are pictures hung up on the wall make sure it's not above the bed or within reach.

Furniture in the Room

  • Secure all dressers, bookcases, desk and any tall wall furniture with angle braces or anchors. This will secure and prevent the furniture from tipping over.
  • Cover all sharp corners with padding or corner covers.

Lighting

  • Use nightlights that do not have a cord and have no access to the bulb to prevent burns, tripping or entanglement.
  • Cover all outlets from the bedroom to the living room to the kitchen.
  • You will not always be there to catch them in the act or to guard your toddler from the dangers in you home. Taking preventive measures is the best safety tool to ensure your child's room is safe because all they want to do is explore the world around them.
